Most people think anxiety is worrying too much. In clinic, I see it show up in the body long before anyone names it as a mood issue.
Patients come in talking about tightness in the chest, clenching their teeth at night, or feeling a constant background hum of dread they can't quite trace to an event. They've been told to drink herbal tea or try a meditation app. When that doesn't fix a racing pulse at 3 a.m., they assume they're doing something wrong.
You aren't broken. Your nervous system is stuck in an alarm loop.
How Anxiety Feels Day to Day
Anxiety isn't polite. It doesn't wait for a stressful meeting. It leaks into quiet moments.
You wake up with a sudden jolt of adrenaline before your alarm goes off. Your shoulders, neck, and jaw hold constant tightness through the afternoon. Brain fog sets in, and you stare at an email you've answered fifty times without finding the words.
Because the gut and the brain communicate through the vagus nerve, nausea or irritable bowel symptoms often track directly with your stress levels. Many patients find themselves canceling weekend plans last minute simply because leaving the house feels like climbing a mountain.
What Clinical Treatment Looks Like
When we treat anxiety at Tusse Behavioral Wellness, we don't hand you generic advice. We look at neurobiology, daily habits, and history together.
We start with a thorough psychiatric evaluation. We check your sleep architecture, thyroid levels, caffeine intake, and symptom timeline. Sometimes what looks like generalized anxiety is untreated ADHD or an unmanaged thyroid shift. Getting the diagnosis right matters.
Next comes targeted medication when appropriate. Medication isn't a life sentence or a personality wipe. For many patients, an SSRI or a targeted non-habit-forming anxiolytic lowers the alarm volume enough that therapy and daily habits can take root. We start low, talk through every side effect, and adjust based on how you feel.
Finally, we work on behavioral retraining. That means learning to interrupt catastrophic thought spirals and retraining the autonomic nervous system through paced diaphragmatic breathing.
If anxiety has been running your schedule, you don't have to white-knuckle your way through another month. Reach out and schedule a consultation with our office. We will build a plan that fits your life.
